Sam Miles
Sam's Crew Castle
Ft Lauderdale, Florida
The woman Sam that owns this business is out of her mind. She has signs on every square inch of the house with very specific instructions on how every little thing is to be done and threatens that you will be immediately kicked out if not done her way. She kicked out every guest in the house in December with no notice or explanation.
While I was there it was hot outside and the air conditioner broke upstairs where most of the bedrooms are. Every night was like sleeping in an oven. She has taken the handles off the windows so they can't be opened and the hot air just stuck around. After several days of complaints she finally went upstairs to check out the problem and started yelling at us girls because we had opened an exterior door to let in some cool air.
She started ranting about letting in raccoons and rapists even though the door is on a private second floor balcony. If she is that concerned about rapists then this is a neighborhood that no one should want to stay in.
Guests are expected to clean up after other guests and to wash their own sheets. Shoes aren't allowed to be worn in the house, but they also aren't allowed to be left on the shelf by the door, which makes no sense.
The location of the crew house is much too far from the dock walking areas.
Her online "testimonials" going on about how great it is staying there are obviously written by Sam, as the experience is nothing like what is written. It says how helpful she is in finding jobs, but she never gave a damn about helping us. She only contacted us to complain about something or to ask for rent, which she often asked for at the wrong time or even forgot when you had paid her and asked for it again.
She is ridiculous about demanding you take a "sailor shower" because she is such an environmentalist, even though I saw lots of inefficiencies in her electricity usage.
Privacy is a huge problem as she has cameras all over the place to spy on guests.
Her crew house is getting a bad reputation locally. Every time I would attend a yachting function and tell someone I was staying at Sam's Crew Castle they would start smirking, laughing, or suggest I stay elsewhere, which a lot of us did. Very few people stay beyond a week.
The bottom line is that Sam is too old and bitter to be running a "hospitality" business. I never felt welcome or comfortable on her property because she is so jaded from the few bad patrons she has had in the past.
